At what point (date) or serial # was the valve guide issue updated?
Was it a recall at some point, or only addressed as the problems appeared? |

| Just because a VIN# falls into a range doesn't mean the guides are bad. I've got an 04 with 35,000+ miles and no guide problems. |

I bought a used O3 Multi with 7900. It never idled correctly. Seemed to idle with just one cylinder. I just rode it. Did not know there was a problem. I did all the service myself including replacing the cam belts. It has 27K on the bike. Just had the valves adjusted and I guess I have had a bad valve guide on the rear exhaust valve since birth. It does not burn a drop of oil. Runs great other than a rough/poor idle. So, I think I will ride it another 30K and live with a poor idle.
The dealer tried synching the throttle bodies in hopes for a better idle. Never got better. Maybe I will look for a late model 09 mutli motor and put that in later. Probably no good will replacement for me.....

starting will get more difficult and oil consumption will begin to increase as they get worse, got mine done a 35,ooo miles.
I do think it that people worry too much, mechanics do need to highlight stuff and then the worrying starts |

Even after I had the warranty repair, my guides still went bad by 40k miles, even the one they replaced at 20k. My understanding is that virtually all multis will eventually need the guides replaced due to the design and installation of the OEM ones. The stock guides are pre-sized to fit the valves and installed without enough honing, so the distortion of pressing them into the head makes them non-linear, so eventually they wear until your valve is rocking side to side. Aftermarket guides are installed and then honed to size, so they are dead straight and last much longer. I'm planning to get my guides done this coming winter. Its not the biggest deal, costs less than $400 if you just ship them the heads.

Same here, is a traditional cylinder leak test used to identify a bad guide? |

Not really Fred as the desmodromic valves don't actualy shut tight except when they are running.
Burning oil on start up is one of the signs....whip the rocker cover off the front exhaust (because its easy) and see how much the valve stem moves is another.
CJS Racing did my heads, he gets special guides made, fits them, then reams to size after. |

I recommend Dave Lillard at Redline Motorsports in Yorktown, VA. Dave did my guides using better quality aftermarket ones. He has them in stock. He has done guide for others on this list. In one case the owner had a cracked head which could not be fixed so he had to get a replacement head. My point is that bad guides might not be the only problem.
I had Dave port my heads and replace the valves while he was doing the work. Overkill, yes, but since I was putting in new oversized pistons it made sense to bring the entire engine up to new specs.

| I did not have Dave at Redline do my guides, but wish I had. I used another shop and regretted it. They're done, but it took a lot of effort to get my heads back and cost more than it ought to have. |
