So I found someone that has an 06 at $4.5k and has about 8500 miles on it, but has a couple minor issues.

It has a fork seal leak (but he has the seal and will give it to me). I've read up on this and it seems like a pretty common issue.

Is changing the seal an easy DIY project? Never done the forks before but am interested in learning.

It is also missing the factory tail light holder (he said it flew off a few weeks ago), and he has a temporary brake light wired in right now. It's not a huge issue to me as I could buy some kind of fender eliminator kit.

He is the 3rd owner, and his dad owned it before him.

What else should I ask him about the bike?

Does it have the same potential issues as the '05?

1) the valve guide issue
2) E-10 fuel induced tank expansion issue with Ducati fuel pump "O" ring recall
3) Overly cautions fuel gauge warning light
4) Normally very noisy dry clutch.
5) need of cam belt change

It seems like a good deal, but is it? Should I ask for less? He was asking for $5.5k but dropped to $4.5k because he needs the money to fix his truck.

Thanks in advance!

If you can get it for 4 k that would be worth the money if;
You can get the maintenance records.
Red key plus 2 black keys

Check with a dealer now, you may still qualify for a free tank replacement.
Dealer will put new fuel flange on 4 u no charge.

Standard forks or gold Oliens ? Standard Showa are not hard to change seals.
Is it the inner seal or outer wipers that are bad?
Get oem seals don't risk it on cheap aftermarkets, you will need a seal driver for the correct diameter fork.

Don't worry about clutch.... It is loud.. But as long as it works correct.

Look for smoke to tell you have a bad exhaust valve seal

Get a leakdown tester from harbor freight. Test the cylinders. If good your golden!
They are cheap!

Rear light sets are cheap. Easy to find because most of the time they are not damaged In a total.

Other than being black ( for some reason ducati made the red ones a bit faster) you should be in great shape with this bike for 4k!

Thanks for the advice!

It's a black 06, with gold forks. He actually just told me that he'd replace the seals before selling it to me if I bought it. I'm asking him all the other questions and trying to get maintenance records too.

Will call dealer about the flange seal.

Forgot to mention that it also has Leo Vince slip ons too.

Will buy a leakdown tester and test the cylinders. Hoping if I do go to check it out, everything works perfectly because it's ~400 miles away! (Texas is a BIG state)

I have a red '06 with under 5000 miles that I'm selling...it's in pristine shape. If any interest, let me know.

I talked to him and he only has 1 black key and that's it. He also doesn't have service records, but says it was serviced at a Ducati dealership, which makes me a little wary. I'm thinking of buying a vehicle history report to see when it was serviced. I know it won't show me WHAT they did to it, but it will show the dates, correct?

What should I do?

@Scrambles I appreciate the offer, but you're 1700 miles away, so that wouldn't work out because I don't have the time/money to ship/ride it back to Austin.

Valve guides are the critical issue with these bikes. If they haven't been replaced it's only a matter of time and it will cost you about $2000.
Also, I can't imagine someone owning the bike that long without a red key.
Doesn't sound right.
