I have posted this inquiry under Problems as well, as it fits both forums. I apologize if this is a breach of protocol.
I am considering a used Multi at a dealer. Can anyone tell me if the following '04 vin is one of the valve guide issue bikes, and whether there is a way to find out if it has been done. The dealer seller says it doesn't know. Shouldn't it be able to find out? Are there any other issues I should be careful of on this particular MTS?

I am at home right now and dont have access to run your vin number but I did have this saved on my home comuter for the valve guide issue.
SVC-06-011 All Ducati models equipped with 1000 DS engine
This is to inform you that on the 1000 DS engine the intake and exhaust valve
guides could wear out prematurely. This condition could cause lack of compression
and excessive oil consumption.
In order to eliminate this condition a new copper alloy material has been introduced
in production. Starting with December 2005 production all 1000 DS engines above
a designated engine number have been equipped with valve guides made of the
new copper alloy.
Super Sport 1000 starting w/engine number:

Sport Classic Sport 1000 starting w/engine number:

Thanks, motodave. If you can let me know I would very much appreciate it. I am torn between some used bikes including two '04's and a left over '05 and '07 as well as a used '07. Whether I will be faced with this issue effects my decision greatly as the "bargain" is lost if faced with a big repair bill. How much is it to change the valve guides? |

Valve guides on 05 multis were junk also, mine were bad at 3500 miles, 06 and 07 have also had some problems |

I bought my '04 almost two years and 8000 miles ago. I am the third owner. Who knows what was done to it before I got it and all I've done is normal maintenance. The thing runs like a top and I would take it anywhere tomorrow. I'd say tonight but it was a tough day at work that required a little vodka to temper. 10 hours bottle to throttle is what I say. |

I have a 05 MTS 1000ds with 40K (original owner) miles & when newer, Ducati mechanic said valve guides look good, but now at 40K & different Ducati mechanic now says valve guides need rebuilding? Told me to many miles for Ducati to cover, but if they know of the problem should they fix it no matter.
Any help appreciated with this problem.

Sorry to heat of the issue.
If indeed at lower mileage they were fine and now bad- Ducati may have an argument.
But i think that t 40k they really shouldn't be bad...
Several places with replace the guides at a fairly reasonable price.
Do you want me to come over and pop off the heads for you?
(How are things going?- sure was fun having you guys visit)

Hi Maddog
Valve guides wont last forever because the the rocker arm following the cam works on an arc so it puts a slight pressure side to side every time it opens the valve.
I got mine done at 35,000 and have noticed that last I did my shims/collets
that they could do with replacing again ..at 90,000 miles.
The engine will start to burn oil before they really get bad as the valve stem seals will be unable to cope with the movement, probably from the front pot first as the exhaust valve actually sits in oil when at rest.
don't loose any sleep over it just save a few bucks each month ready to get it done sometime |

Aloha Mark,
No oil leaking or burning between oil changes yet so I'll run it into the ground till I notice oil low & then take care of it. You & the wife always welcome in Hawaii & you can use my bike or 4Runner if you need transportation.

We still always talk about that ride to the Olympics on PCH.
