I'm considering purchasing an 1100S and it would be my first italian bike. I've heard that maintenance on these 2 valve engines isn't that bad. My main question is, is it possible to do most everything with a standard set of tools? Specifically, oil changes, valve adjustments, belt replacment and wheel removal. For any of that will I need special or ducati specific tools? What about removing the rear wheel with the single sided swing arm, any special tools needed for that?

Removal of the rear wheel requires a fairly large socket (is it 46mm on the 1100s?), or you can buy one of the special socket tools for this purpose. The other maintenance chores you mentioned can be done with the same tools that you would use to do them on most other brands of motorcycles. No 'Ducati specific' tools required.
Oh, you may have to get a 'special' oil filter wrench if you stick with OEM filters. They can be difficult to get out due to being recessed in the engine cases. If you switch to K&N or aftermarket, no problem. |

as above it is easy  belt change one of the easiest jobs on Ducati
If you still wondering take one for a test ride and let it speak to you in its own "Italian" sounds |

| Thank you both. Now really the only thing keeping me from buying is the gas tank swelling. I wouldn't want to buy used and find out my local dealer refuses to replace the tank either now or in the future. |

I don't think he would really have any reason to, unless the tank had already been replaced. I've only read a few tales of dealers dragging their feet on tank replacements since the class action law suit was settled. |
