Hi all, total Multistrada newb here with lost of questions. Im thinking about a MS 1000 or 1100 to replace my Buell XB12R. I LOVE the torque of the Buell but need something a little better suited to very tight twisty narrow mountain roads, often with less than ideal surfaces, here in Japan. Also Im getting a bit tired of the the sports riding position. The older Mullti's are getting quite cheap now and I always loved them so I thought it might be time to try one out. I have a few questions.

1)How much better is the 1100 than the 1000, if any? Is it worth the extra $? I've read that 2005 and up is better for the 1000.

2)I was happy to see that the non 'S' model at least has adjustable suspension. Im pretty sure I could dial in the non S suspension and get it to work well. Is the 'S' worth the extra $? How good or bad is the stock Show/Marzochi/Sachs suspension?

3) What are the typical mods people do to get the most out of it and what does it cost? My current bike, Buell, required only a slip on muffler. Not much gain was to be had with after market headers or power commander type fueling devices which made it quite cheap to get the stock bike a little bit sportier.What would I be looking at doing to a Multistrada 1000 or 1100?

4)Also, from the videos Ive watched on youtube the MS appears to have that torquey punch at almost any revs that I love about my Buell. Is that the case? Can you just cruise up behind a car then overtake in a quick blast by simply twisting the wrist? or do you have to wind the engine up a bit first or drop a gear? Anyone ridden the Buell XB12 engine and could compare?

5)Hypermotard! I'd love one of these but they are a bit expensive here still. The MS1100 and the Hypermotard have the same engine don't they? Anyone ridden both? How do they compare?

Anyway, that's about enough questions for now. Any help appreciated.

1. I started with an '04 1000DS. I now have an '07 1100S DS. Yup, there's quite a difference. The 1100 makes about 15+ more ponies, and more torque... enough for me to notice a difference. The later model Multis ('06-'09) have a lot of stuff sorted from the earlier models... valve guides, electronics, etc.
2. The S model with full Ohlins makes a noticeable difference.
3. Mods? A lot of people change exhaust. If you do, remap with updated ECU or PC. Remember, PC doesn't necessarily give you more ponies, but your bike will run much better with a proper air/fuel mix. New seats are also popular. Stock seats are plywood. Ergo mods are also popular.
4. MTS has gobs of torque. Highway speed passes without downshift from 6th gear are easy. Twist the throttle above 4000 rpms, and she goes!
5. Test rode a Hyper. It's the ultimate hooligan bike. Same basic engine, but 4 valve watercooled. More hp, more torque. Front wheel won't stay on the ground!

not that i am trying to justify owning the 1000 but ummm
you are a little off on your HP diff between the 1000 andthe 1100
most would say 3 to 5 hp difference and the torque figures about 3 ft lbs
give or take...see our Wiki here on this site 15+ hp spot .. is major

and i have ridden a sorted 1100 and the only diff i could see/feel was in the middle and that not much ...Imo the 1000 pulls a little harder up top..you must of had a slow one Smile
Now this little push back may start up a little frack but you do know that i ride one of the faster Black ones Wink

I think the Ohlins are worth the extra $. I had an '04 1000 and now have a '08 1100S. Ducati shows HP for 1000 at 84 and 1100 at 95. The 1100 does for sure have some of the earlier issues (fuel gauge reading and value guides) sorted out.
Good luck. You will enjoy either model a lot! They are fun to ride and you can load them up for a pretty comfortable trip (if you do something about the rock hard seat).

I had both my '04 1000 and my new 1100S on a dyno, and the 1100 had more than a 15 hp difference. My '04 made 76bhp, and the 1100 made 92bhp. Both bikes had mods. The 1100S is black mind you...

Ducati themselves quote an 11 hp difference between the two bikes on ducati.com. '04 1000DS at 84hp, the '07 1100 at 95hp. These are Ducati hp quotes, and I've always found them on the high side.

I certainly noticed a difference. The MTS 1100 (1078cc) is the same engine as the Monster 1100, which was the first Ducati desmodue to make 100 hp I believe.

so the 1000 was red ...eh .... there we go more proof that the black ones are faster Smile 79hp is weak...if accurate for a 1000 BTW..

My 1000 was dynoed at 88 with an Arrow system... i had a 1992 900ss that was dynoed at 82...pretty much stock..with just cans and a different dyno.
i do not put any stock in dynos as to what is... they are really for comparisons for the same machine as to improvements re tuning..
they also vary as to MFG so then i have seen a variance as much as 10 percent on the same bike..

i guess my point is this 100cc does not make a 15hp diff especially in a 2 valve Ducati...
15hp is alot ..you could pay big bucks for a 15 hp gain.
I know this from experience.. in fact i just did re the flowed heads ihave done on my 1000, and i will pick up perhaps 10% not bad but roughly 8 hp and hopefully fatter torque threw the middle.

100cc may make a diff in torque curve and where HP is re rpm and Ducati can say whatever they want.The 1100 does make more power but not drastically so..
Check the wiki here it really does make more sense IMO

Well... my very first bike was a Honda CBR125. It made 17 hp. So, 15 hp from 100cc is definitely believable. I was surprised that my '04 1000 made less than 80 hp. But, both bikes were run on the same dyno for comparative shits and giggles, and the 1100 was noticeably different and about where I expected it to be.

Also, when it comes to Ducati's hp claims, I've always thought they were a little optimistic. Ducati says my '09 Monster 696 makes 80 hp, but I seriously doubt it. I also seriously doubt the new Panigale makes 195 hp.

I've just had a dyno run today started with 89.7hp @ 7968rpm/10.9kgm@4904rpm and
ended up with 93.1hp@8418rpm/10.0kgm @ 6362rpm measured at the rear wheel.
DP Air box
K&N Race Air filter
Leo Vince De- Cat pipe
Termignoni Race rear muffler with DB Killers removed
DP Race ECU
NGK Iridium plugs with BIG gaps!

I previously had a similar spec'd 1100S - but it was the slower red model........

My son rides the XB12 and I have spent some time on it. The motor on my son's XB has race pipe & ECU.
Very similar power to my 08 MTS, pretty much stock. The MTS is my pick of the two, it will accelerate quicker and handle bumpy curves better than the XB...

Thanks for all the input guys, I've read as much as I can find regarding specs etc. so its good to hear about what it feels like to ride. I'm going to keep my eye open for any bargains that pop up. I guess the biggest question now is Red or Black?

For the 1100 they started giving crank HP rather than rear wheel.

From the ones I've ridden, the 1100 has a bit more bottom end than the 1000 (both stock)

Mine has more than a stock 1100, at least set of the pants.


From my experience, tossing the stock 'per-muffler' (CAT in Europe) makes a very noticeable difference in bottom end and of course sound.

I think the S is with the cost, but the stock and be made to work quite well.
I prefer the S type bars- well, if you replace them with Rizomas. They have a taller riser and larger diameter in the middle, up toward the grips (supposed to be a bit better for vibes)
I'd probably look for a 2007 S.
