I've been looking at an '08 1100DS S with 7xxx miles on for three years at my local ma and pa motorcycle shop. Every time I drop by for something for my ST1300 or DL650 I linger over it. So...

This bike was a write-off. It was one of three that the shop owner bought. The story is that it was dropped on a gravel road and the plastics were all messed up, but mechanically it was OK.

So, they took the bodywork and fuel tank off an older 1000 DS (probably and '03 to '05 because it is two-tone grey in color) and put this bike together. So it is badged as an 1000DS. It has all the carbon fiber bits of the S model and the Ohlins suspension, and a Staintune after market exhaust. Also a Sargent seat. It has no bags.

So the concerns are, what would be a reasonable price for such a bike? How much impact does the Staintune exhaust have on gas mileage and would it have had a remapping? Assuming that the they just swapped tanks, how much of a concern would it be if the this bike has a fuel pump and filter that is (possibly) 5 years older than the originals and not made for the 1100 (the part number appear to be different, but the pics in the parts guide look the same)?

I am DIY guy. I've never owned a Ducati, but am attracted to them. I want to use this bike for touring/commuting/fun. There may be a possibility that they have a complete (and messed up) set of bags for this bike, which I would be willing to 'restore' if they are not too bad. Also, they might have an OEM exhaust (they still have a donor bike that is not worth fixing, but I haven't see it yet).

What do you think?

3,750-4,500. Keep the Staintunes. Yup

One concern (that came up while reading other postings on this forum) is the older fuel tank and the possibility of ethanol warping of the plastic. I wonder how common that is.

Very common in the States and becoming more common in Europe as more and more is added to our Gas-----was 5% then 10%--- now rumblings of 15%

However, not heard of problems in your neck of the woods yet. Last I heard was------ Canada is Ethanol free---------- for now!

Unless you know different?

FYI The 1000DS fuel gauge is the only real change from the 1100--------1000 fuel gauge is useless, 1100 fuel gauge is almost useless.

i wish that were true..but no not ethanol free totally in Canada.
Premium fuel in Alberta is ethanol free and i think in BC it is as well.

The multi in question sounds kinda special being the silver color and a 1100 with Ohlins and carbon.. Staintoon etc ..
Canadian prices on used Multis are higher than the USA ...I would be curious as to what they are asking.
it should go for less as it is been " put together" as in not original ...
i wouldn't worry re the 1000 parts on the 1100 they are pretty much the same bike as far as the plastic , fuel pump etc go. i would have concern that it was assembled correctly and if the dealer is good than you may have a winner.

definitely time for a test ride "eh"

I would say its worth checking out and if you have a Multi itch than look around as well ..there have been some primo examples on this site as of late..
They are great motorcycles , they come with some issues but then again most motorcycles do...

Regarding ethanol in fuel, it has been standard in Canada for many years. However there are exceptions. Chevron does not add ethanol to their 94 premium, which is what I usually run.

My concern is that the tank may have been exposed to 6-8 years of ethanol already.

The original asking price was $10k. They are down to $8k but open to offers. I have not made an offer yet, but plan to ride the bike.

Kelly's has a US retail price of US $7900 for a pristine 1100DS S, which this is obviously not. Some bike prices in Canada are actually lower than in the states (example the new DL1000). But for reference I add 10% to the US prices for comparison.

I understand that I would be making a commitment to this bike. If it doesn't work out, it would be difficult to get out of, witness the fact that this bike has been sitting for 3 years on their floor. But I think the owner has remained firm on his price in the past.

Ok, to spot signs of tank expansion firstly have a good look
Around the fuel pump flange. Any signs of leakage mean its toast.
The X ring is a tempoary soloution only!
Then have a look over the whole tank for signs of bubbling/flaking
Lacquer and or paint.
Most I have seen start with small bubbles/cracks in
lacquer around the top front sticking out bits, also seen large chunks of paint falling off from under
The front of tank.
Mine is so bad that it will not go back on! I can't actually fit it. Nor can I remove the seat as the ethanol has
Forced the bolt holes apart.

So I'm waiting on Chris Kelly to get mine made.
Don't be fobbed off with (they all do that, etc) walk away

Not so fast... It would have a salvage title if it was I. The states since all the plastics were damaged. I am not sure how CAnada does that.

I would say that would be a 5k bike in the states because of the mismatched older plastics.

Seems high for price to me.

I was going to ask if States or Canada, but looks like Canadian Vancouver...

Does it have a salvage title? (Do they do that in Canada?)

I wouldn't be afraid of the silver, but certainly the tank may be ready for replacement before too long. I think there is going to be a silver one made.

I know I wouldn't try to sell my 2005 S for that much. And it is very nice, runs fantastic and lots of mods....salvage title but new frame.
I'm not sure what it takes to import a bike into Canada.
It is a pain into the States,

Mark
