bike1:
2004 1000DS 10,000kms
pros:new tires, fanatically clean bike. stock everything, Ducati accessory softbags, silver wheels
cons: MIL on (needs service?), leaking fork seal

bike2:
2004 1000DS 18,000kms
pros: fresh oil change, new plugs, Termignoni pipes, Ducati hard bags, plus more accessories
cons: black wheels, may need tires?, may be running rich (exhaust smells rich?)

both are priced within $5 of each other. both VINs are within 10 builds from each other.

please help - i am wracking my brain lol

If exhaust smells rich, it may be it has bad exhaust valves.

If they are both the same I would go with the termies and the hard bags, that is about 1,700 worth of extras.

take it to a dealer and ask them to inspect the compression and the condition of the valves. Also ask to see if all the recalls were done, and the service was done ontime.

Bike 2. Dosn't look like it's been cared for. Eg tuning neglected, tyres
Neglected, dirty, usual tell tale of owners mindset. Low ball bike 1 and
Fix fork seal as long as chrome tube is not chipped.

thanks for all your responses...

i have one more to add to the list though!

its a very rare (for Canada) silver, all stock. slight scratch & cracked fairing on the rear right. its priced lower by $500 - but has the most mileage (27,000kms). it will need some TLC, but i have ridden it, and it rides very nicely

i love how the silver stands out over the red. it appears more sophisticated..

Hum... I'd go with bike #1. Sort of like buying a new bike and you can make it your own. Kind of fun buying the bits you like - many will show up in the marketplace on this site. I would always go for lower miles...

#2. All the extras are extra nice and will help to make the experience more complete for you. The rich smell is probably a valve adjustment or could be simply bad fuel.

Make a lowball offer on #2 and tell'em it needs tires and looked at for the rich smell. The black wheels are also faster than other colors...

#2 also has a tank bag and hand guards, so it's ready to tour. If you don't tour, forget it, but if you do there's a lot of expensive accessories there; it may even have heated grips. I can see what look like a few carbon bits too, so money's been spent on it.

Mileage is only one of the parameters to factor into your decision; a well looked after bike can easily top 100,000 miles, but yes, it will require more maintenance and there will be some big ticket items at some point.

Bike 2 doesn't look neglected, it looks like it has actually been ridden. Imagine that, a Ducati that someone would rather ride than polish.

Have the maintenance checked and make an offer minus tires and whatever minor service you need.

The bags, if you need them, are really hard to find as is the Termi exhaust with its improved performance ECU (which may account for the richer fueling).

Bike #2, unless you have reason to be concerned about condition and maintenance, would be my choice. It has lots of expensive and getting-harder-to-find upgrades (Termi exhaust, Ducati bags and brackets, DP handguards, which work well). It also has the tank bag, which may be useful, and, the MRA Vario windscreen instead of the stock turbulence generator windscreen. 18,000 km is nothing if well maintained and ridden. Tires could be negotiated...but the accessories on #2 add to both the value and to the usefulness of the bike.

Dirty MTS? Who cares. These bikes are to be ridden. Seen a lot of clean low mileage show-queen Ducatis. But....they are usually the sportier Ducs. The ones that look cool, but aren't practical enough to actually put a lot of miles on. Most of the Multistradas I see out in the real world are dirty...and that means they are getting used.

Good luck with your decision.

Silver is the prettiest. What did you buy?

My bike has stinky oily smelling exhaust but no smoke. Just reading this advice and maybe I need valve work from what I read....
