New to looking at MS bikes. I have 3 different MS bikes I'm looking at. 2004 1000 black with 35,000 miles pelican luggage. $2500. 2004 1000 red with 975 miles and loads of extras including factory luggage, $6000 And finally 2007 1100 with 27,000 miles only extras leo vince exhaust plus factory luggage $4900.
Which is better the 1100 or 1000 engine? Any thing else I should be looking at with any of these bikes. Thanks

Hi Motogummer

First: Have a look at this ... http://www.multistrada.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=33481&start=0

Management summary: Take the 1100. The extra 20 Nm is worth the extra money.

Cheers

Sam

I second the 1100 opinion.

Nothing is wrong with the 1000, but the 100 is newer, less mileage and and price point is kinda in between the other 2, and ... BIGGER IS BETTER !

The 2nd one with low miles I'd be suspect of. These things need to be worked, and I'd rather have one with many miles.

Hi guys n gals,
Size! what does the size of the motor matter? if you can ride a bike well it not really important apart from the bullshit in the pub about what speed you "achieved ?" usually in a straight line somewhere. I ride a 620 through choice and after most rides my pals say are you sure that's only a 620cc motor. Just enjoy what you have/want the only race on the road (cars, traffic Police etc ) is to the graveyard.
Small rant over,
Ride safe and stay upright!
Cheers,
Faz.

I do agree with you, same with cars. Here in the US, muscle cars are supreme but 99.9999% of them never really get opened up and cannot turn worth a crap. On the track though...., I'd rather have my 1200 than a 600 at Road America which has very long straights....but you still have to know how to corner.

It's more than size, 1100 had lots of improvements.

Didn't the '04 still have the weak point in the frame? That would be my deciding factor. Like another poster, the extremely low miles would also make me leery.

buy the bike with the best service records..if they are not available look
elsewhere, those that are meticulous are proud of what they have owned and your chances of a good used machine are much better ..
1000 ..1100..it matters little..

+1 at keener.

Hold on: Which improvements the 1100 should have the 1000 haven't?
It's mostly the 100 extra ccm, the 2 additional horsepowers (which you can't feel, fastfaz), the 20Nm extra-torque (which you can feel), the frame improvement (on which I never had any issue with the 2 2004-MTS I've owned and still do), but that's it.

The aircooled in general is a great bike.

Kind regards

Sam

1100 has the advantage of

Fuel gauge that works

Wet clutch that is far more dependable

More torque

07 had Marzzochi forks that gave a nice ride

All worth considering

I had a 620 and an 1100. Go for the 1100, it is a little more refined than the 1000, with a wet clutch and most of the niggles sorted. Another pointer to it's evolution is that on rideouts my 1100 always used less fuel than the 1000s yet had better acceleration.

Fastfaz, it's not a case of how well you can ride, you are what you are, but when that extra dose of torque kicks you up the backside you know why the 1100 is better. My 620 was great, the best bike I'd owned up to that point, but the 1100 was greater, with the possible exception of commuting in cities where the 13kg lighter 620 was more nimble.

Coman this is a true little tale for you. Some years ago (I was still racing at the time) I worked part time in a bike shop selling bikes and clothing, one beautiful Saturday afternoon a guy rolled up on a 1000 Gixer I think it was 10/11 months old I gave him a coffee and we had the usual bike chat etc. He then asked me what sort of a deal we could do on the latest model Gixer from Suzuki which had been out approx. 3/4 weeks, I checked his bike over it had done around 1500 miles and was absolutely immaculate I asked him why he wanted to change such a pristine bike and basically lose a load of money? He replied the new bike is faster on top end and it handles better. While I was checking the bike over I noticed that the sides of the almost squared off back tyre still had the makers little rubber spikes in place about a good inch in from the sides (I don't like the expression chicken strips) needless to say he did not do a deal but I couldn't help thinking to myself why do you want a faster better handling bike when you can't ride that one.
I believe that you should ride whatever you personally are happy with and if it suits you that's fine. Ride safe people and stay on two wheels.
Oh dear only 4 more days until the Scotland trip!
Cheers,
Faz. Laughing
