I am in New York City,so it is always stop and go.I get roughly 80 mile in the city and about 120 on the highway or thats what I got the last time going to Atlantic City.
I wonder if this is normal or how much milage I lose being in the city traffic everyday.

Only had mine for a month, done about 600 miles at exactly 59 mpg (UK). Commuting locally plus 80-85 mph cruising. I'm very pleased with this, but once light comes on at around 130 miles start looking fuel a bit quick. I've had a long push already! Be glad to give phone number if you want any other feedback.

I was getting low 50s mpg (US) before 6K tune up, after, upper 40s. I can smell it running rich now.

Typically the light comes on at 140 miles

your mileage may vary Laughing

I get about 50+ mpg , just ripping around.avg mph is 40 60. The light goes on a around 140 or 150..

I always watch how much she takes when I fill her up.. I almost always have .9 left in the tank @ 150 miles.. I have gone as far as 180 before filling & still have had about 1/2 gallon left..

Steady 60 mpg riding 50/50 suburban-town/backroad scratching. I don't ride it super-hard and generally short-shift around town.

Got 60 mpg during break-in (under 5,500 rpm), mixed city/hwy.

Got 48 mpg 1st tank after break-in, mixed.

Now have settled into 52-57 mpg, mixed.

All at 5000' altitude and above.

Up until yesterday I'd be answering up about the same as everyone else aroun 150 miles before the light comes on and usually about a gallon left when I fill it.

Yesterday I did a 450+ mile day and the mileage got really interesting. I gassed up at home, rode about 35 miles and then we stopped so my buddy could gas up. He has a BMW GS 1150 with about a 250 mile range, so I figured I'd top off. I put the bike on it's' side stand (which I never do--usually gas up while I'm on it so I can keep it level) because the attendant told me to have it (they fill your car for you here in Oregon). I put over two gallons in it. I was a little shocked because after using two gallons, I should've been over a hundred miles down the road (highway riding). I tried to figure it out and after putting 147 miles on it before fueling up, I wrote it off to getting ripped off by the service station.

So I gas up again and put only 2.18 gallons in it--that's 67 miles to the gallon. My friend still hasn't gassed up, so we go another 80 miles or so and get lunch. By this time he needs gas, so again, I top off, thinking I can probably make it the rest of the way home when--surprise again, I put another 2 gallons in it--again I'm surprised, because I should've been farther down the road (gassed it up on the sidestand again). I ride it from there all the way home--192 miles and no fuel light.

Just put gas in tonight and only put about 2.7 gallons in it--on it's sidestand (at that point I had 197 miles on it, so 71 mpg). I can't figure this out. It's getting heroic mileage one tank and below average if I fill it up early.

After topping off, I rode about 10 miles tonight. I went home, popped the lid on the fuel tank and couldn't see any gas in there--after I'd just topped it off.

I kept mentioning the sidestand thing above because I'm beginning to wonder if there's some spot in the tank that the fuel isn't getting to--which would explain why there's suddenly a lot more room in the tank when I gas up mid-tank (the fuel found its way into whatever hole it can't get to when I fill it). I thought the weirdness with the fuel tank was mostly a "feature" of the 1000, but now I'm beginning to wonder.

The first two tanks I got around 70 mpg, and then the mileage fell off after that to 55-60 mpg. Oh yeah, I have almost 2700 miles on it now. I've had the exhaust on it since about 4 miles on the odometer and no other significant mods. Any ideas?

ducatiRay, I think its the air bubble issue. The tanks for the 620 and 1000 are the same but ours don't have the breather valve at the back. So there's a gallon+ of space wasted back there. What happens after a short ride is that you've move the air bubble. High acceleration will force petro to the rear and the bubble up front. I haven't seen any real difference between side stand or upright when filling. And the rocking back and forth gets me about 3/10 of a gallon more, so normally I don't bother.

Any simple, low cost breather valve solutions would be greatly appreciated.

I believe you are SUPPOSED to fill it ON the sidestand, which allows the fuel to completely fill the tank. I think it says this somewhere in the manual.
