New member here, so flail away at my ignorance. I'm coming from a MX/trials/RR past. I have had a few BMWs, and ridden many Japanese sport bikes (thanks, but no thanks), and a big KTM fan. Currently riding an '02 KTM Duke II, I am sold on the riding position & torque of a thumper (and V-twin). Spoiled by WP suspension & a decent riding skill set, I am down to a (gasp) Yamaha FZ1 or a MTS 1k. I know where the skew leans here, but I am wondering if anyone here has time on both bikes to compare? The MTS seems right for all the types of riding (city/sport/long trips/hooligan activities), and I'm itching to to get to the next (better) step. Also, another stupid Q is: Is the Ohlins worth the S upgrade? I the non-S suspension just crap? I'm new to Ducati, but not to buying the right stuff.

S=worth it. It is one of the best parts about owning the bike imo. The ride is plush beyond belief and riding 2-up means 3-4 turns vs getting out the tool. get black.

My good friend whom I ride with every weekend has the Duke as well. We swap often and I've noticed aside from the 620cc to 992cc, there is very similar feel between the Duke & the Duc. Torque & grunt.

He loves his Duke (it is after all a great bike for the twisty bits) but would also love to have a MTS.

I have the "S". Feels nice. Not sure in a blind side by side test (not recommended) I'd notice the difference. Maybe I would.

I had the FZ6. Similar to the FZ1 in fit & finish.

To compare the FZ1 & the MTS 1000 is a bit odd though. Fairly different bikes with very different price points. Money no object?

Hope this helps to confuse you further.

I LOVE my MTS... and chicks dig it too.

two up on the ds doesn't require any tool, come on now....a couple turns does it.

sorry, does the DS have a standard shock and not an outboard adjustment?

my bad, did not know that the feature was available on both setups - still like the ohlins, but I have not been on the other offering

Fully adjustable Showa shock, hydraulic remote pre-load control

the ds shock has three adjustments locations, but you can just reach down and crank up or down the preload on the fly on the right side.

$$ is always a point of contention when buying new (to me), but if a $1500 difference in suspension & other bits is discernable to someone riding for 30+ yrs.... then it's a worthy expenditure. The (new) FZ1 is cheap compared to a (new) MTS, and I'm looking at them as a do-all-fairly-well type ride. A faired SuperDuke would be optimum, but that isn't happening within my budget (dammit). A used/new 2005-6 1000 S-DS seems to be all the right stuff - now I just need to find one in my neck o' the woods.
The more I look/read about the FZ - it's good, but the FI needs work, the suspension options are zero (other than Ohlins replacements), and the whole inline 4 thing may leave me uninspired quicker than a thumping twin. Cheaper indeed.

This may hit ebay sooner rather than later.

I had an 02 FZ1 for a while - if you like twins and engine braking you might very well hate the bike - power is frantic, when that sucker rolls on @ 7k+ watch out and they added more power to boot this year, totally not needed imo. my rear preload was done at 185# so forget 2-up unless you mod. The S is a totaly luxury comp to the FZ for my purposes, I find it hard to compare them. If you want a good jack of all trades and like twins the mts is a good bet - I can't wait to ride the damm thing

Collyer,

The seat is the Ducati Comfort Seat, it is gel filled. I love it, but you have to watch leaving it in the sun, the gel gets mighty hot. May not be the seat for Dallas. But comfort-wise, I find it really nice, just enough. I don't right much highway miles, if I did, I'd probably want a bit more plushness, but on the twisties and back road travel...I like it.

The backrest, I designed and had made by a seat maker in Seattle. I've had 4 made up for others here on the site, and I'm getting ready to make a couple more. When you get your bike, if you want one, we can do it for you.

Thanks for all the info - I just discovered AMS Ducati in Dallas, and they just happen to have a red 2006 1000S DS as a demo bike. So, I'll be going down there for the saturday test ride. Mmmmmmm, Ohlins.

It will go for >$5500. The silly SM fender was put on wrong, and will eventually ruin the headlight cowling (seen it in action). Slippery stock Pirellis, too. Great bike, needs the Y-pipe, different jetting (which mine has). Nice stickers, too. I like the black, but the Orange sparkle is all KTM. Shipping to El Paso from NJ? $650. Borrowing a pick-up to round trip to Dallas? Fuel costs & time.
No state tax/change of state registration fee, inspected until May '07.....

Now how much would you pay......
