Hello everyone. I'm new to the forum. I am strongly considering getting a MTS 620, or 1000. I would be buying a used 620 (obviously because they aren't made anymore), or a 2005 -2006 1,000 because I prefer the silver wheels vs the black wheels of 2007 models. I've also looked at an Aprilla Caponord, and a Kawasaki Versys 650. Currently, I ride a 1991 Honda NIghthawk CB 750 that has served me for 10 years without any problems. As far as the MTS are concerned, I've heard that the avg. price for the 600 mile service is $550, and the 6,000 & 12,000 mile are $600. I ride for pleasure and commuting and want a good, reliable bike I can count on. Do these service prices sound normal? Is basic service easy to do (like changing oil?)? I really want to get a MTS, but am afraid they will into a repair/cost nightmare. The Kawasaki Versys seems to be a direct competitor with the MTS620, and I am guessing less maintaince and maybe lower costs. Any and all information would be great!

Welcome, you've come to the best Multistrada resource there is (in English anyway). There are still brand new 620's to be had out there for about $6.5-7k. $500 for a first service sounds high, it's essentially just an oil change and a once over, figure about $250 or so. If you can handle a wrench, or can learn from someone who does, you can save a ton in service costs. The Multistrada experience is totally emotional anyway, when you ride one and you like it, you won't care about the service cost anyway.

Be scared, be very scared. These things cost a lot to maintain. We pay it because we love the bike. Your coming off a Nighthawk which had, I believe, had 24K service intervals on the valves and no personality. On a duc that's 4 valve checks and 2 sets of belts. My guess is 3K in maintenance at least. Others will disagree, others do a lot themselves, I just pay it.

BTW - at 21.5 K miles mines been spot on the whole time.

I love my bike but if you want the twin experience with low cost get a Suzuki v-twin.

Go ahead guys - hit me.

The suzk twin is not the same. If you are up to it, a mic for your lap top and software package with cable with your hand tools and service manual will have it handled. Its not magic, just go slow until you get comfortable with it.

Take the 20K mi service for example. The biggest $$$ is replacing the air filter and the fuel filter. Why? Because it takes shop time to remove the tank. However anyone can do this - seriously even if you aren't that inclined it's a simple matter of following very simple directions. Tackle that yourself and leave the shop to replace the belts and do the compression check and check the steering bearings and compression. Hell you can replace the belts yourself too. Easy peasy.

Figure out the easy stuff you can do and leave the shop to do the hard stuff that requires the computer (adjusting idle mixture and so forth and adjusting the valves) and you cut your service costs in half or less.
