There are several used 1000's in my area, and good pricing on new 06' 620's.

2004 mts 1000, 6k miles(service completed), for $7000

2004 mts 1000 with 3800 miles, aftermarket exhaust $7600

and last but not least, a new 06' mts 620 for $7000 plus freight, etc

The question is, which is the better deal? I've read about valve guide issues on 04's. Is this why people are selling? Is it worth trading the suspension, extra hp, and sexy swing arm of the used 1000, for the piece of mind (i.e. warranty) if I get a new 620 instead? I also heard the 2006 will have better seat, mirrors, and none of the valve problems. Any thoughts?

It's tough to buy a new 620 when I could have a used 1000 with 6k miles or under for around the same price.

I'm new here, and to the Multistrada. This forum is great. Thanks in advance.

You're buying a Ducati, is price really a consideration?

I bought the 620 cuz I wanted to be able to use the full range on the road everyday (and stay alive and out of jail)

They are both a good deal. If you plan on getting an exhaust anyway then the one for $7600 might be a better deal.

I prefer the 1k 'cause I am a bigger guy and like how roomy it is.

Don't know why folks are selling them. They are one of the best bikes I have ever ridden and the best I have ever owned.

I have an '06 and had the valve problems so don't believe that. My seat is better than the '04 but that is an easy fix.

Don't worry about parts for the 620. There will always be parts available for it. Hell, they are not making the 1k anymore either (now it is the 1.1k). If you can test both then I would recommend that.

good luck,

For me the bigger engine would win every time. Whether you use the maximum or not, the torquier midrange of a bigger engine would always get my money.

I'm not that bothered about the registration plate and tend to buy on condition rather than age. Also prefer stock exhausts to aftermarket, so I guess I'd go for the stock 1000 if the condition were ok.

I tend to view external condition as an indicator of internal condition, so it if looked as though it had been looked after I wouldn't be bothered by an odo that showed a few thousand miles.

It's a toss up, the 1000 has enough power to not need to be thrashed to keep up with traffic, the 620 is new. Remember, though you take a real beating on price when you buy new. All other factors being equal, I would go used.
