Re: Which 1000ds to buy ?!??
My vote is get the low mileage bike. Ride it hard, budget 1,800USD for the valve guide replacement in 3 years, then you can monitor the work IF needed.

Re: falling for a 2005 1000ds
Keep in mind at 4,000 miles you have plenty of fun riding to do before the valve thing needs addressing. <maybe 2 years to get yer ducs in a row before it may or may not need work.

Do not be alarmed, yes it is a great bike, yes the valve guides must be addressed.
Check the bikes #'s vs the ones listed in the Aircooled section's 'sticky at the top.
Check or ask for recommendations on someone to do the work. Done.

search this site for engine#s for the soft valve guide issue. More important quiz local dealerships on their ability and track record in replacing valve guides on warranty and leaking fuel tanks on warranty. Both issues were just fixed for me, might not always be the case in NZ

If your demo ride didn't 'rock your world'. this is the wrong place for opinions."H-D sport-touring" is an oxymoron. There is nothing sporty about H-D touring bikes.
Plenty of milquetoast rides out there waiting for you
