I have located a new 2006 Multi 1000 DS. can someone tell me what they would consider an "incredible deal" -- the dealer seems very willing to negotiate so i'd like to know what would be a really REALLY good price without being overly aggressive.

I have also been laboring over the 620 vs 1000 question. I have lines on two new (2006) bikes in each case for really good prices. My moto-head friends all say i should get the 1000 and that i will be really glad i have the extra oomph long term...that I will probably be bummed I passed on the extra CCs after I've had the 620 a few months and the initial infatuation has passed. I plan to do mostly one-up so the two-up advantages of the 1000 are not that big a deal. but the way i am thinking about it is that for the extra few grand i basically get:

1) more power/fun factor when i do want to push it or fly by a truck or whatever
2) better two up for when the gal does want to come along
3) higher quality components (brakes, shock, console, etc)
4) no significant added weaight (30 lb or so).

i would love your thoughts despite this being a very frequent topic on this forum...like:

- is the 1000 as nimble in the curvy roads?
- is the maintenance/reliability equivalent?
- other key differences?

Thanks for any thoughts you care to share

(1) The 1000 is really nimble on any road.
(2) Not sure if the maint interval is the same but you have a wet clutch I believe with the 620 so that is a bit more durable. I don't think they suffer from the valve guide problem but that is a warranty item anyway.
(3) Single sided swingarm rocks. Especially for changing tires. You mentioned that you do two up riding and having the extra power is always nice to have. The 1k just feels nicer to me than the 620. The 620 has plenty of power for one up rides on twisty roads and it is nice and light. Insurance is probably a bit cheaper too.

Good luck and make sure you post pics!

I am a 620 guy. Love the motor. What ever I did not like, I changed. Will go as far as to say that it is likely faster on the track than many of the 1000 / 1100 out there.

PS. you can actually feel the 30+/- lbs. difference. That was the deciding factor for me.

Not sure how useful the extra 1500 are, but the rev limit on 620 is 10000, on the 1000 its 8500, if that means anything to you.

thanks for the replies folks...keep em coming if others have opinions, this is really helpful.

i am going back and forth but i guess the good news i i can't go wrong either way. i have ridden the 620 so next step is to ride the 1000.

the only issue i had with the 620 was that the engine sounded/felt a bit empty/tinny/airy when hit the throttle. not sure if the 1000 is the same. i don't want some harley loud chug chug sound, but wanted a bit more resistance on the throttle and to "feel" it a bit more if that makes sense. i understand this can be changed by adding a new after market exhaust? maybe a question for a future post.

i really liked how light and responsive the 620 was....i used to have a 1989 BMW K75 -- the "flying brick" as they called it. getting on the 620 MTS felt like the difference between some slick new parabolic high tech skis and the old heavy plank banger 40lb skiis i had in the the 80s. soon as i thought "turn left" the bike was already entering the turn....really amazing

Yesterday I was invited to test ride a spanking new 1100S Multi and a 1100 HyperMotard by James Willbanks, the new Ducati Dealer in Little Rock, AR.

My buddy and I rode the bikes about 30 miles out in the country over a variety of roads that included Freeway, city, and winding country roads, we then switched bikes for the return trip to the dealership.

I have owned a yellow 620 Multi since the first of Feb and logged approximately 4000 miles on it in that time. In city traffic the new 1100S felt exactly like my 620. I could sense the extra 30 lbs or so extra weight. Under 5000 RPM it is difficult to tell the difference in the 620 and its larger brother. Above 6000 RPM it is a whole new world! The 620 is very quick, the 1100 silly fast.

In tight twisties the 620 is very, quick, light and agile. The new 1100S had the new Ohlins suspension plus some extra pony's. Probably a slight edge to the 1100, but not much.

In a straight line, with aggressive right hand, no contest. But, the domination does not start till around 6000 RPM. The little 620 more than holds its own, and I am glad I have mine. You can find a really nice 620 with low mileage for around 6K, price on the new 1100S was over 15,000. Bang for the buck.........620, no contest!

I have recorded over 60MPG on my 620 on several occasions during 400-500 mile trips. I am told to expect mileage in the 35-40MPG range on the 1100.

Both great bikes, speed costs money, how fast you wanna go? They had a 1098R on the floor, (sold) $42,000 plus.

thanks TnTimbo - very helpful info

i am leaning towards the 620 but the test drive will be the final step as i have not yet driven the 1000. given what i will be doing with the bike the 620 is probably more than adequate -- mostly buzzing up and down the northern california coast etc.

I had the same problem two years ago. I was about to pull the plug on the 620 but after a test ride on the thou I bought the last one.

First of all has the engine more punch and torque. It feels like you never have to hurt the engine if you drive at normal speeds.
And if you need to overtake you dont have to switch gears.

The 620 rides great and the engine has enough power but it is a bit light when you drive with a passenger.

Next to the engine I like the looks of the thou. The single sided swing arm and rims are much nicer. It even has a light sensitive dash with nice blue lights and computer.

I am happy with my choice and would not want to trade for a 620.

Good luck with your choice!!
