Hi there

Having had my 03 1000 DS for a few months now I'm getting ready for a new rear tyre. Rather than pay someone to remove and refit my rear wheel I tend to prefer to get a new tyre fitted to a loose wheel.

Obviously I'll need a 46mm socket to get the wheel off, but looking online these don't seem to be that common (at least not in the 1/2" ratchet drive size that I'd prefer) and also quite pricey.

I've seen some 41/46mm tools advertised on eBay for £30 to £35 - are these any good? I guess you're getting two tools for the price of one there. Anyone had good or bad experience of these? There are a few available, are any better than others in terms of quality?

What's the perceived wisdom here? Ebay tool or conventional socket? Can anyone recommend a UK tool shop (online or otherwise) where I can get a 46 mm 1/2" drive socket at reasonable cost? Or failing that, has anyone got a spare or surplus 46/41 mm socket that they want to sell me. I'm in the UK so prefer local to avoid high postage costs.

I bought a cheap socket set instead of the dual purpose tool. The tool seemed real nice but then there's no way to properly torque the nut. With a socket set I could use my torque wrench but I also had to buy a 1/2" to 3/4" adapter (torque wrench is 1/2", socket set is 3/4"). Sorry, not in the UK.

Sorry to say I do not think you find a 46mm socket on a 1/2 drive it will be 3/4 with a 1/2 adapter, and use a torque wrench, only other advice is buy the best you can you will have it forever.

Speedymoto makes the best tool I've ever seen for the Ducati SSS nuts. It's pricey, but it is reversible for both the sprocket and wheel nuts. It is designed with a piece which slides inside the axle and prevents the socket from slipping off the nut.

Hands down the best solution IMO. I was at a trackday 2 weekends ago and a friend wanted to get his tires changed on his 848 (same rear axle as Multi). His shop apparently put the nut on with an impact wrench...we couldn't get it off with a standard design socket, even while standing and bouncing on the breaker bar. I borrowed one of these sockets from the Speedymoto guys, and the nut came off right away. The design allows for more force to be applied to the nut without risk of it slipping off.

I bought the socket and a 3/4 to 1/2 adaptor and a big cracker bar. Worked a treat and will do again tomorrow. Don't forget you will need a big torque wrench to get up to the tightening setting, off the top of my head 180Nm, anyone confirm?

I like the idea of 2 in one socket so I bought one, and have used it twice.

for some reason the nut seems to be quite tight to loosen even when torqued correctly so may have to shock it initially.

Triumph makes a 1/2" drive 46mm socket. Does anyone know the drive size of the Speedymoto tool?

I regularly buy from tooled-up.com reasonable prices & good quality kit. I can't remember exactly but I got a pair of 3/4" sockets in 41mm and 46mm and a 1/2" - 3/4" adapter for about £40. Lasting well so far at 4 years.

Getting the wheel off is a right pain because the nut is v tight. Northern Tool do a 24V electric wrench for about £80. Excellent quality and a very good price - best quality Ive seen at the price. I've had a couple cheaper ones which were rubbish.

As far as torqueing it back up is concerned, I used to struggle with someone else holding the bike and me leaning on the torque wrench, but I'm not convinced it has to be that precise - after all you need to align the hole in the axle with the slot in the nut so that the spring clip goes in and that always means adjusting it after torqueing, so you've lost the torque value then. Now I just put a dab of paint on the nut and end of the axle when its tight and just retighten to that position, and only use the torque wrench every fifth or so time just to check I'm still in the right ball-park.

I use the SAE equivalent to a 46mm socket (sorry, can't remember the size). Bought it at a local discount tool store for about $15.

Mark - having priced up the 2 sockets and a 1/2" to 3/4" adaptor on Tooled-Up.com it comes to about £36 - about the same as one of the double-sided tools on eBay. I guess the sockets are more versatile...

I notice that the tools on eBay are alloy - surely this can't be as tough/strong as Chrome Vanadium Steel? Have I missed something here?

Also - any comments on the quality of Sealey sockets - cheap, but does that also mean nasty?

I bought a 1 13/16" impact socket with a 1/2" drive in Halfords (UK highstreet car parts store) for £13 today - fits perfectly.
