Hi all,

I am new to the forum, but hoping to be a multi owner soon. I have my eye on a local MS1200. I've researched and ridden and am in love with it, but for one thing...wind noise. I am coming off a Tiger 1050 and the single biggest thing I didn't like about it was the wind noise. I tried every conceivable fairing...no use, naked is the only reasonable configuration, but then I get bunches of buffeting at speed. When I rode the MS I noticed a lot of wind noise. I didn't get a chance to fiddle with it much, but at highway speeds with the fairing way up I was experiencing a similar level of noise as the Tiger.

My question is; have others had a similar experience and were you able to mitigate the noise some? I am 6'2" and ride tall, so yes, I always get a good dose of wind noise behind a fairing, but some bikes have a sweet-spot for wind and I'm hoping thats the case with the MS1200.

Thanks, and sorry for the run-on.

Bob-

there are several threads on this on ducati.ms

http://www.ducati.ms/forums/44-multistr ... creen.html

I'm finding more noise than I'd like on my 1200, though completely tolerable with earplugs. I think the problem is the small size of the screen at the top, which generates a lot of high-speed turbulence on either side of your head. The actual wind pressure isn't a problem- the blast doesn't hit your chest. I think the best screen for noise will be a California Scientific:

but it seems awful big for me at 5'9" as the shortest one they make is 4.5" over stock. At yoiur height it might be just the ticket. I am getting one of their shortys for the summer- some folks have suggested that going lower/smaller gives more force on the chest, but leaves your head in cleaner and quieter air. YMMV...

Dave,

Thanks for the thread links, helped a lot.

Looks like I'll be chasing similar wind noise issue as with the Tiger, but I'm game for the challenge.

A heads-up for you; I used the Cal-Sci +10 on the Tiger and it was DREADFUL. The noise was even louder...definitely try before you buy if possible.

Thanks again,

Bob-

you're welcome. I am using an MRA Vario which helps, but there is stil a roar. I wish I had 3 hands so I could make small adjustments while riding- makes me miss the electric screen from my RT. I think there is probably a quirt(er) zone, but small adjustments will push you out of it. The MRA has teh Variable upper wing, and I think there is a sweet spot of height plus angle that would work if I can just find it...

I'm going to ask CalSci if they can make a shorter touring screen- 4" higher than stock is way too tall for me- I don't like looking through the screen at it's lowest setting. If they would make their same design at +2" it might be a winner.

Meantime, I needd a new helmet any way, so I'm going to try a Shoei Quest- the fit was much more snug around the ears than my HJC, which might help. It's supposed to be the quietest helmet out there.

Best of luck with other screens. I was just thinking how it always seem to be a problem with "all rounders" I had a GS1200, terrible wind protection that I never really solved despite throwing money at it, my mates tiger is awful and the MTS too.

They just dont seem to bother with it when it's such an important part of the ride.

I now use the multi for 500m round trips but have a R1150RT for continental touring which is superb.
I did have a K100 but that was like riding a caravan behind a bay window :(

just thinking aloud :)

Glad to hear its common among tall-rounders. I rode a 1200GS through Northern Spain and found had noise issues there, but not as bad as with the Tiger.

I am guessing that the common issue is the absence of lower fairings  . I have noticed a lot of air blasting up the cockpit just behind the instrment cluster; something I haven't noticed on bikes with lower fairings, like the R1200 or Sprint ST. I'll experiment with fiaring that wind away and let y'all know if it makes any difference.
