pure curiosity - what does "58 plated" mean? I'm sure its a UK thing, but I just can't figure that one out. Good luck with the sale, by the way!

Does 58 plate mean the bike is a 2008 model year or that it was bought new and first registered in 2008? If you bought a leftover (never registered) 2007 model new in 2008, would it have a 57 or 58 plate?

yes a leftover 2007 would be on a 58 plate if registered in late 2008

I've often wondered that too, and even went online one time to try and find an answer. I ran into sites talking about expensive number plates versus cheap number plates, national number plates, and personalized plates (which I can understand, since we have them in the US). I never got a handle on it, and cannot understand why it seems to be so important which number the plate one has when selling a vehicle in the UK.


That would be like me saying I have a 2008 multi for sale, with a North Carolina 2007 registration. Who cares, the new owner is going to have to re-register it in his/her name anyway? Plates must be damned expensive in the UK.

Steve, it could be like an airplane that requires expensive updates ever year so a bike that was not updated can be confiscated by the government of the UK if you do not do all the green updates on it. Then you will be forced to walk to your job at the coal power plant!

In the UK we run two periods for numberplate years, 1st March to end of August, and Sept 1st to end of Feb.

When a new vehicle is registered in the first period (March to August) it gets a number plate with the current year, i.e 2012 would be a 12 plate.

When a new vehicle is registered in the second period (Sept to Feb) it gets a number plate with the current year plus 50, i.e 2012 would be 62.

The slightly confusing bit is if you were to buy a new vehicle in Jan 2013 you would still have the 62 numberplate.

However, some people delay buying new cars etc until the new number plate is available, not as much as they used to when the numberplate system was using letters of the alphabet as the year indicator, as this only got changed once a year, on Sept 1st.

Hopefully that sheds some light on the system we use..

Thanks, Mike. That explains the numbering system. But I still don't have a clue as to why the number on the plate seems to be so important. It's typically one of the first things listed in the UK For Sale posts. What earthly difference does it make to the buyer if a bike has a 58 plate or an 08, or some other numbered plate? That just indicates when the seller registered it, doesn't it? The buyer is going to have to get the bike registered in their name, pay their own taxes and reg. fees, and get their own plate aren't they?

In the US, we just bolt on our new plate when we buy a used vehicle, and either turn in the old plate to the DMV if we feel like being good citizens, or just chuck it in the trash.

When you buy a second hand bike or car etc, it keeps the same plate, it just gets registered in your name. So if it has an 08 plate it keeps that forever unless you pay for a private plate or one that means something to you i.e MY 08 MTS, but it has to be from the original year of registration and not newer, you could not put an 09 plate on a bike originally registered in 06, this way you can easliy tell how old the vehicle is, some people really want the newest number, others are not so bothered.
