Hello all,

I am considering a purchase of an '07 MTS 1100s, less than 5K miles for around $4K. The caveat is that the bike is having some starting issues. The owner already replaced the starter motor and battery and the issues persist (specifically he can only start it with the bike connected to a battery tender). Based on my reading on this forum, it sounds like this issue can by remedied by freshening up/adding a ground and examining the crank position sensor. Or do you feel that this is a show-stopper?

I will be sure to also check for signs of a swelling tank. Is there anything I should be weary of? I'm concerned about the condition of the belts given there was so little mileage over the past decade...do you believe they will need to be replaced?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much in advance!

If the engine ground at the left upper front of the engine case is dodgy it will cause all sorts of starting/running issues,easy to check and secure, a star washer is suggested between the cable and the case to ensure a good connection. It might have a starter sprag starting to shit the bed. Mine would crank slowly and drag, giving all the symptoms of a low battery but it persisted after new battery was installed. Sprag pieces are pretty expensive so you might try to talk the price down some. Over all the bikes are really reliable and 4k sounds like a deal.

Doesn't hurt to check the starter relay too for corrosion. It's in the left handside by the battery compartment.

How many miles? When were the valves serviced (you need to see the service receipt)? Belts? sounds like it may need more than just battery.

If the valves are not done and you can't do them yourself your looking at a bunch of money, call your local dealer.

That may not be a great deal.

How does the tires look? Chain? Sprockets? millage?

Dig a little deeper.

There are only 3K miles on the bike so I would imagine the valves/chain/sprockets are in good shape, I can't imagine he's done a valve service at only 3K miles. The tires very well may need to be replaced given their age, I'll be sure to check that out.

When the time comes for a valve job, I do plan to do it myself. I'm more concerned about any electrical woes as I suspect the bike has sat in the rain for at least part of its life. Can you recommend any pain points to inspect regarding the electronics?

Also is anyone aware of the '07 MTS 1100s in a white body/red frame color combination? This caught my eye as I don't think I've seen another one like it.

I am 99% sure that the Multistrada was never sold as new with the white body/red frame. The bike must have started as a red/red bike and either due to personal preference or damage to the original bodywork, it was changed.

I vaguely remember someone on this board making that swap at time of purchase. Who knows, it could be the same bike.

At the risk of stating the blindingly obvious, it's cheap for a reason. You may sort it for peanuts and get the deal of the decade, or buy a total lemon. I guess that at that price you could always break it up to recover most of your outlay, should you realise early on that it's going to be a money pit.

I bought a cheap 1000DS knowing it would cost me £1000 to sort it (that's parts alone, as I do my own spannering). It cost me just a bit more but I've put 40,000 miles on it, and it's still going.

I bought a Hypermotard 796 cheaply as it had a severe running problem. It cost me less than £1 to sort it - part by luck, part by judgement (split pressure sensor tubes, past the throttle butterflies, so sucking in lots of air and throwing the whole fuelling).

If you're going to rely on a garage to sort it out for you, it's probably not worth it. Otherwise, why not?

Sold! bought it today for $3k with 2.4k miles on it. I got to take it for a spin and it ran great. The bike was originally red, but prior owner removed all body items to repaint white.

First thing will be to sort out my starting woes (ill begin with the ground and CPS and see how far that gets me). The tank doesn't seem to have suffered from expansion so I'm thinking Ill get it coated before it begins to warp. Ill do some searching on the forum for the best product.

I think i will also replace the belts since they're over 10 years old, would anyone else agree?

At that price it's a great bargain. Given the substantial saving I'd be tempted to get it serviced and sorted by a reputable specialist, unless you really know what you're doing. That way you should have a 'baseline' to start from as they will have all the tools and software to sort it out properly. From then on you should be able to keep on top of things with the assistance of this forum.

Whatever you do, also check the belts rollers carefully, including taking them off the bike and shaking them. Any excessive tightness, looseness, 'grittiness', will warrant replacements. And they're not cheap! Rollers failure is by far the most common cause of belts failure. And THAT's very, very expensive.
