How is the maintanence on the MTS and what are some of the problems I can expect to run into? I'm looking at buying a Ducati, possibly a MTS 620, as my first bike. The reason is mainly because the insurance is cheaper. But will maint. costs be higher than on a Japanese bike? And will that cost offset the money I'm saving on insurance? Insurance for the Duc is roughly $800 a year and most Japanese bikes roughyly $2400. That's a pretty big difference.

Maint. isn't too bad; first service was $252.00. A little shocking at first but worth it, and the 6000 mile service is supposed to run about $550.00. So yes the maintanence costs are more, but it just depends on what you want. With the higher costs and such, owning a Ducati is well worth it. It's just not another cookie cutter rice burner on the road. :wink:

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. I've got 2500 miles on it in three months and zero problems.

Check with your local dealers on the maintenance costs. They can vary widely from one to the other.

I just had my 620 serviced at 3K for a "safety check" (2K road trip next week) and the total cost was $114.

This included torquing of all nuts/bolts to required specs, chain adj, tires,
installation of Cycle Cat frame sliders (I provided), warranty replacement of leaky plastic oil plug, oil and filter change (I provided the oil and filter also), slight rear suspension adjustment.

I was told there is a problem with handlebar allen bolts loosening over time on the Multi's and the bolts should be torqued to a spec of 26 ft/lbs.

When I recently replaced mine with Gen Mar risers the allen bolts were indeed very loose and way too easy to un-tighten.

Members might wanna check those as a safety pre-caution.

There's always a small percentage that's going to have problems. I have 10k+ problem free miles. Hope you have the same. Buy it, you'll love it.

How old are you big_carl? I m 35 years old. I am switching to Geico for about $415 for two bikes full coverage, BMW R1100SA and a Multi 1000.

If you had the money I would get the bigger bike, 1000 not a 620....you will out grow it quickly....

thnx again, it's my first bike so i don't think i wanna get into a 1000 just yet, that and the guy that owns the shop doesn't wanna sell me one since i've never ridden before. i'm 31, geico quoted me at $644 a year or something like that just recently.
