I'm looking at buying an '04 Multi. I'm a little concerned about the valve guide issue, I don't want spend all my hard earned cash on the bike only to find a hefty repair bill for new valve guides a couple thousand miles down the road.

The dealer did a search on the VIN but said nothing came up and the only bulletin on valve guides was for the ST, which is a completely different motor. I searched the archives but couldn't find any specific information concerning a bulletin number. It sounds more like dealers are performing the repair as a good faith gesture, and some dealerships won't.

So, my question is is there a specific document number I can refer my dealer to check? Usually bulletins have some sort of reference number. Or, perhaps those that have had the services performed can provide their service managers phone number and I can follow up with them?

I appreciate the help!

Hi Jeff,

This is a well known problem at Ducati. It is not a repair that is being done out of good faith by dealers, Ducati is paying for it. If your dealer can't get you the info, I would suggest a call to Ducati Seattle, or other quality dealers mentioned here at this site, and ask the service manager to help you out with a bit of information to take back to your dealer. I'm sure they would be happy to help you, just tell them your situation.

This repair will not cost you anything, should your bike need it.

good luck. I have an '04, and I love it. I had the valve guides and valves replaced and it runs beautifully.

Scot,

Thanks for the info, it was helpful. I contacted David at Ducati Seattle and he was very helpful. In case anyone needs it, the information concerning valve guide issues is in a service bulletin. The number is: SVC-06-011.

I will follow up with my dealer in the morning.

Does it make ant difference if the bike is in warranty or not?

No, it doesn't matter. Ducati is sucking it up and taking care of the problem..

I was only given the number of the service bulletin, not the actual bulletin itself. Sorry.

I just found out my engine in the '05 'S' is in the range too. I have had no problems (10K miles) but will have them replaced.
Ducati Seattle was very good about checking, they didn't think the year was in the range, but were thorough and checked engine numbers to make certain.

I would rather not have to get it done, but at least they are standing behind the problem.

Hey Mark,
I'm curious what your build date and VIN are. My '05 'S' is not affected. It was made in 10/2004 and the VIN is ZMD...11079

Mine is 10/2004 and vin is:ZMD.. 11051 not very far from yours.

The dealer said they had to go by engine number, not by the build date. You may want to have them double check using the engine number...

I have had no issues at all, but they said it sould have them replaced. So I'l have them do it.

Is the VIN number different from the engine number? When I contacted Ducati NA, they specifically asked for my VIN number and then, based on that, told me mine wasn't affected. If so, I wonder what VIN was the last "bad" one or which was the first "good" one?

Yes, I would imagine the engine number is different. I'm just going by what the dealer told me, that they had to go by the engine number.

Since mine must have been made in the same batch, it would be worth checking into anyway. I'll try to get my engine number to you- perhaps there is a different batch of engines?

My 05 has to have the work done. They found the problem while replacing a bad fork seal at 11,2K. The dealer said I could ride without a problem 'till my 12K service (which will occur at 14K). I assume the bad guides woud cause a little oil comsumption and loss of compression if it wears to the point that the valves don't seat properly. They said I could still ride and I don't want to miss any of the season.

I didn't have any problem with the valve guides on my '04 until I was down at Laguna Seca. Bike ran great but once the temp got over about 200 it would heat up rapidly :x . Red light came on a few times and it stalled a few times. So the valve guides are being replaced at 24,675 miles.
