Wanna buy » Normal engine behavior for an MTS ??

If you're interested in buying a Multistrada, this is the place to post questions about the bike.

This is a follow on to a thread I started (03 vs. 07 MTS) in the Marketplace forum about a week ago. Now that I've ridden the bike I think this is the more appropriate thread for this discussion.

I went and rode a used 03 1000DS this morning. I'm not sure how to best describe it other than to say it wasn't totally smooth at lower RPMs... for lack of better words I'd say it was a little jerky ... nothing serious though and other than that it ran smooth.

This is the first MTS / Ducati I've ridden so I thought I'd check with others on the site before making a decision on whether or not to buy. I appreciate any feedback on whether or not that is normal behavior?

Other than that the bike looked and sounded great and seems to be in pretty good shape.

If you are talking about below 4000 - 3500 rpm, then yes that is normal. If it is above that area then there is something wrong.

Thnx kneepuck ... I'm pretty sure it was below 4k but didn't look to see the tach immediately when I felt it.

I disagree, when I first got my 05 it displayed some jerkyness at low revs. But with carefull balancing of the throttle bodies and tuning it is now smooth from 2500 rpms. I think the jerkyness can be tuned out by balancing the throttle bodies with a set of mercury carb sticks. It worked for me.

This is what I found to be true as well; doing the throttle bodies, spark plugs(to something other than the champions) and most importantly, setting the proper valve clearence and cam timing! All things being correct, it should be fairly smooth at lower rpm's as long as you are not trying to cram full throttle in. Desmo's like mid to high rpm; don't try to ride them like Harleys or BMW boxers and you will have a happy experience.

The gearing makes a difference as well. The stock gearing is pretty high in order for the bike to pass noise laws. Going down a tooth in front or 2 to 4 teeth in the back will help it at lower speeds.

thnx for the feedback. The bike looks to be in good condition and this gives me a bit more comfort

The owner also purchased an extended warranty. Its covered through a third party vs. Ducati so I'm checking to see what all is covered and if any Ducati dealer can do the service. If that's all good then I feel a lot better that if anything goes wrong in the near future I'm covered.

thnx again, this forum has been a big help.
