Hi all
I’ve been reading the forum on Multi or ST3 that someone placed a while ago, I seem to be in the same place as I have a sportclassic (sport1000) 06 model and finding the wrists/back an issue after only a short ride. I’ve placed rises on the bike and this helps a lot, but at 48 I think time has come to get a bike with a bit less strain. I looked at the MTS before I bought the sportclassic but the look of the sport won me over (still does) so the rest is history. I have great roads around here for the short blast, but I would like to do a few longer rides that I can’t do now. I don’t like the look of the ST3 and I’ve had two 907’s which were a great bike but time has caught up with them.
I've gone to a few dealers and the trade in price is crap on a new 1100s (mine and 7K is the best) if you then add the pipes and so on the cost amounts up fast.
So my question’s are, how much better is the 1100s over the 1000s and is it worth paying the extra money for the S any way (it’s about three 3k more over the standard unit).
Would a 05 or 06 MTS 1000s second hand be a good buy (better then losing all the money again on stamp duty, pipes and other extras) if it’s done 20000+ ks (miles) on the clock.
The bottom line is the trade in price for the MTS appears to be not that good, so I could loss more money again if I sell soon after? The other thing is the dealers don't seem interested the a second hand sportclassic???
Any thoughts on what to do re new or old…….
Regards
Trevor

Hi Trevor!
From what I was reading the difference between 1000/1100 in the low revs must be pretty noticeable. Over all I guess the plus in power of the bigger engine is not all that substantial, some of it seems to get lost in the strict emission controls. So, since you know the 1000 engine already, you should know whether you are missing power at the low end.
I am not, after the 30.000+ km with my '03 MTS. I had the valves and the oil-lines replaced, apart from that -and the flaking paint- no other realiability issues with the bike. The engine sounds and feels as if it would easily run for another 30.000 km.
I do not know the "S", it was not on the market when I became addicted
Anyways, I bought the Öhlins rear shock - more comfort and cool looks-, and had the forks reworked- a huge difference in comfort and feel for the tarmac, strongly recommended!!
Short, I guess the "S" might be worth the extra money. That is, if you can live with a leaking fork
, pretty common with Öhlins ...
good luck deciding...,

I have a '05 'S' and test rode a 1100 S.
I thought the bottem end was better, but not like night and day over mine with Arrow collectors, stock muffler and mixture adjusted to 5%CO.
The most cost effective would be to buy used. When new, the original S was only about $1500 more than the non-S, an easy upgrade to make since it would be WAY more to do it later. I don't ride that hard, but find the Ohlins are incredibly plush.
Keep an eye out for bad valve guides on a used bike, I understand Ducati is covering it under warranty (even if out of warranty) but I'd want to know first.
I see the new 1100 non-S have a different suspension than the older bikes, I'm not sure how they compare.
If it was me and trying to save a buck, I'd look for a used S.
Oh yeah, the 1100 with have an actual working fuel gauge, better low end, rubber mounted bars (perhaps less vibration on long trips?- I dont' have a problem).

New VS used ?
Where money is of concern, consider this........................
A new Multi will lose around 30% of it's invested $ value in the first year.
And thats not including the cost of any accessories.
New anythings are never a smart monetary investment.
But, with the thought of never planning to resell, buying new can create a stronger attachment / pride of ownership between you & your machine.
But all thats using a rational mindset.
And frankly, I never let that crap influence my bike buying decisions, lol.

Hi and thanks for your thoughts
Yes Hans your right about the motor bit, I’ve happy with the performance of the 1000 but having not ridden an 1100 yet and only reading what people are saying in the sales burble it’s hard to get any idea of how good they are.
What I’m looking for is the nuts & bolts things like the Öhlins front & rear suspension, wet clutch, new maintenance, rubber mounted bars or any other characteristic that the new bike has over the 1000s or the standard MTS 1000. My sport can’t have a dobeck EFI fitted to the injection system as yet due to the closed loop system; does the MTS have the same system fitted??
I think (and have been informed by someone) the 05 MTS doesn’t have these issues and that’s why I’m not looking at a 06 MTS, but I’m not 100% on that issue, I was told that the systems were changed in 06 for all models?. This becomes an issue if I buy or make an exhaust system and don’t change the ECU.
To pay $7000 and my bike (it’s done less then 5000 ks) for a 1100s seems a lot of money if the bike doesn’t have a lot of benefits over the 1000s or 1000 standard where I can get a better deal, my bike with a different sitting position to put it in a nut shell. Is their more to the bike?
And huskyduck, your right about the heart (and the money) that’s why I bought the sport in the first place, just love looking at it but kills to ride…..should have bought a painting of it then bought a MTS in the first place. I’m trying not to make the same mistake again (well not to soon anyway)
Regards & thanks
Trevor
P.S. Great site for info and feed back
