I'm new to the Multistrada scene and just discovered your Forum.
I currently own and continue to own an 04 CBR1000rr that I use for track days and commuting. The bike has many mods and is Magic on a track, but really sucks for commuting for a couple of reasons;
1. It's got torture rack ergos for every day riding and,
2. The exhaust fumes tend to swirl back to the rear of the rider during commutes and make you smell like you just got out of a dyno room!
This is HIGHLY irritating!
I Love the concept of the Multistrada, but am gunshy about it's underseat exhaust having the same problem - it's not something I wish to put up with anymore .
So please chime on to let me know if you guys experience this or not - this bike is on a VERY short list to become my next street bike!
I don't think I've been on any bike that doesn't make me smell like gas a the end of a day of riding... VFR did it, F4i did it, Multi does it. One of the perils of straddling the engine while lying over the gas tank... More evident in city riding though.
Thanks for the replys guys - I'm talking about the same smell like you were sitting directly behind the exhaust of a bike, and it was beating you in the riding gear. Not just a general "bike smell". From the above comments I'll take it as a "NO!"
Now, next question - I weigh 210lbs, 5'11'' - Would a 620 be too small engine wise? I wouldnt mine buying in low so too speak if it's not going to feel like a wheezer - Let me know 620 owners................

Definitely a No for the rider. Plenty of people standing outside of bars get it when I start mine up though.

I am 6'2" and weigh about the same as you, and my 620 has plenty of ooomph, but compared to your 1000 it will probably seem weak.

I know next to my 1000, a 620 will. I'm thinking just in general street riding terms, not compared to my 1000. I want to be able to use the engine on street riding adventures, not have it feel slow (in reference to street riding) and have a comfortable, fun, unique, good handling street bike.
I'm looking to take the 1000 off the street and keep it on the track. To tell you the truth, the 1000 has too much power for street riding anyways.... ....I can run it hard through one gear and then have to upshift 5 times at 90 MPH. Not really a lot of fun.........now lifting the front end up at 120 MPH on the track is a great time!
I most definitely do smell like exhaust after getting off the bike. Always annoyed me, but figured it's just another quirk...
Is this not common, then? I know I've had exhaust leaks often enough that perhaps it's not just the normal tail-end exhaust fumes coming out? It's only a problem when I want to take the bike to a meeting and don't have time to change out of my motorcycle pants...
