I am looking for a used Multistrada and have come across several nice 2004 models with very low miles. Is there anything mechanical I should be wary of with this model year? Any recalls to be aware of? Anything I should have checked by a technician before purchasing?
Thanks!

Same as with any used bike really. Condition is worth more than mileage and age. Check that the engine sounds ok and isn't smoky. The top end is always a bit loud on all Dukes and the clutch will rattle a bit, check no oil left behind on fork slider / shock shaft when bouncing, exhaust isn't corroded / blowing, all electrics work.
If its obsessively polished on the outside, chances are the inside will be ok too. If its hidden behind a layer of dirt then is the inside really any cleaner?
Is the owner the sort of person you'd trust to run in your new bike?
Mark.

Valve guide and sidestand recall, was it checked/completed? Is the seat upgraded, or is it "the plank"? (the comfort seat was an option in '03-'04, made standard from '05 on)

Thanks, exactly what I'm looking for. If the valve guide and centerstand recall service has not yet been done will there be any problem getting a dealer to do this work after the bike changes owners?

Some 04s also had an oil cooler recall (lines and the cooler itself).

The valve guides can be fixed even after the warranty is out. My Multi still has the older style sidestand and it has not been a real issue. Make sure the ground is level if you buy one with the early stand, the early stand has a round tip on it which the newer one does not have.
Eastside Motor Sports replaced the recalled oil lines on mine this past June. The early Multi's also had narrow rear view mirrors which did not extend beyond the end of the handlebar. The narrow mirrors mainly show your elbows, the newer ones are much better.

I presume that later-model mirrors will fit an '04? Any idea what a pair would cost?Aprilia997 wrote:The early Multi's also had narrow rear view mirrors which did not extend beyond the end of the handlebar. The narrow mirrors mainly show your elbows, the newer ones are much better.
Also, are the factory panniers still available for an '04? Again, any idea on cost?
Thanks to everyone for responding!

skip the Duc mirrors and get some FAR mirrors, I think they run about $175....they are way better.

The current Givi made bags will fit an '04, or you see them used on Ebay and here on this site occassionally. I like them. New, they are around $1,000...used, the prices are all over the place.
