Re: Buying 03 1000 DS

Do you know what mileage its done ?

Early bikes had soft valve guides ask if they have been done.

if its had a top box check rear frame just around where the rear loop joins back into main frame ....it snaps off.

Re: From Triumph Tiger to Multistrada

Hi Tonic
if you can go for the 1100S as they have extra comfort suspension but there are some really cheap low mileage 1000's around.

have you had a ride on one ?

Re: Thinking of '04 Multi-Valve guides-other issues?

Hi Maddog
Valve guides wont last forever because the the rocker arm following the cam works on an arc so it puts a slight pressure side to side every time it opens the valve.

I got mine done at 35,000 and have noticed that last I did my shims/collets
that they could do with replacing again ..at 90 ...

Re: Need advice from you guys and gals.

Well well never knew where Boise Idaho was before, just google mapped it

you boys really like your straight roads.......you'll need to stick to those forest roads when you're on the multi so you can keep the tires from squaring off.

I think you could do with an Italian guy in the road ...

Hi Solarbronco
Wellcome to our little forum, hope you enjoy our company.
There is nothing that will phase you if you already work your own bikes, this is just a little different valve wise but nothing too clever.
Zookiman is upto 150,000miles or more I'm trying to catch him up but only done 90,000 ...

Re: MST 1000 DS 2004 a few questions about buying

From the manual.....
To check chain (13) wear, stretch the
chain and measure 16 links.
If the length (L) is greater than 256.5
mm, change the chain.
I have found the DID 525 zvm x is good quality and lasts well...not the cheapest though

Try and pick one out with Termis/aftermarket silencer for a rich sound, they are loads of fun, I commute on mine 84 miles a day and the smile just doesn ...

G'Day Clive
Just back from the Haggis Hunt in Scotland ....1824 miles round trip brings my Multi up to 66,824 miles, never missed a beat despite the rain.

Why would I sell her we had such great fun thrashing round the Glens and Lochs.

Re: Snow, ice and salt?

I am an all year round rider and the electrical problem I had was the connector blocks between the Alternator- Rectifier- main loom they are the only ones on the bike(2003) exposed to the elements under the tank that are not water resistant.
The salt dissolves the connectors..flat battery..no starty ...

Please share your recommendation where to send heads and what extra up grades to heads that should be done. I'm going to milk as many miles out of stock original heads as possible. Thanks

Same here, is a traditional cylinder leak test used to identify a bad guide?

Hi oldbmw1
starting will get more difficult and oil consumption will begin to increase as they get worse, got mine done a 35,ooo miles.
I do think it that people worry too much, mechanics do need to highlight stuff and then the worrying starts

Re: Total Control

Hi Brad
the multi is a tall bike and can be a handfull if you are unsure.....but there are guys who have gone for it and still here to tell the tale.

The clutch can be quite fierce too so feathering (letting the clutch lever out slowly) is something you will need to master.

Well done for taking ...
